Leaving YNAB?
You already know how to give every dollar a job. Stash lets you keep doing that, with a budget you can watch move, for less than a tenth of the price.
Bring your budget with you
Your accounts, envelopes and history come over, and every balance matches what YNAB shows for this month. First you export your plan from YNAB, then you open the file in Stash. It takes a few minutes.
Export from YNAB on your iPhone
YNAB’s app can’t export, so you use its website in Safari. On a phone the site hides the export, so it takes a few extra taps.
-
Open YNAB in SafariGo to app.ynab.com/users/sign_in. If YNAB asks you to get its app, ignore that and stay in Safari.
-
Ask for the desktop siteTap the menu button at the left of the address bar, then Request Desktop Website. Sign in when YNAB asks.
-
Tap your plan’s nameIt’s at the top left, above Plan.
-
Tap Export PlanSafari saves a zip to Downloads, in the Files app. Leave it zipped.
On a computer it’s quicker. Open app.ynab.com, click your plan’s name and choose Export Plan. Then AirDrop the zip to your iPhone or save it to iCloud Drive.

What stays the same
- Ready to AssignReady to assign
- CategoriesEnvelopes
- Credit Card PaymentsEach card’s bill envelope
- TargetsGoals
- Covering overspendingCover it
Spend on a card and the money moves from that envelope to the card’s bill, the way you’re used to.
What’s different
When pay comes in, you watch it land in Ready to assign and move into rent, groceries and the trip. When you spend, you see which envelope it came from. If the method never quite clicked, seeing it usually helps.
There’s no account to make and no bank to log in to. Your budget lives on your iPhone and in your own iCloud. We don’t run servers that hold it, and we can’t see it. No ads.
Typing everything in is the slow part, so you can share a screenshot of your bank app and the spending fills in, or tell Siri what you spent.
What it costs
- The budgetFree
- Stash Plus, yearly$9.99 a year
- Stash Plus, lifetime$49.99 once
- YNAB, for comparison$109 a year
Plus adds screenshot import, Siri, reports and the Jars look. Prices are in US dollars and may differ where you live.
What’s missing, honestly
- No bank sync. That’s on purpose. You add spending yourself, from a screenshot or with Siri.
- No shared budget yet. With a family plan, each person in your family gets Plus on their own budget. Sharing one budget with a partner is the next big thing we’re working on.
- iPhone only. No iPad, Mac, web or Android app for now.
- Tracking accounts stay behind. Stash only has accounts you budget from.
- Targets don’t come over, because YNAB’s export doesn’t include them. Stash fills in each envelope’s usual amount so you can set goals in one pass.
